As per Hindu mythology, Brahama created all living things in this earth.
Mahisha Ashur  was one such  ordinary creature who  started appeasing Brahhma by penance and  acute devotion. Lord Brahmma  was pleased and because of the boons given by him Mahishashur became invincible. As soon as this happened he turned on all creature on earth and on all gods in heaven.
His harassment of creatures on Earth and Gods in the heavens reached such proportions that the gods went to Mother Durga (Symbolises nature in many forms) and prayed to her to decimate this evil demon as otherwise Heaven and Earth would be no more.
Knowing Mahishashur's invincibility all the gods got together and gave her the best weapons they had. Maa Durga then dressed for war descended to earth on Mahalaya day(19 October is maha saptami for the year 2004)and after a prolonged search found Mahishashura and killed him on Maha Dashami day, which is the tenth day after her arrival on earth.
Every  year in India thistriumph of good over evil is celebrated.
Huge temporary stuctures are  made and Durga's clay image  installed in them.
She is worshipped and everybody in India asks for peace and happiness.
On Dashmi day, a huge bamboo and paper Ravana figure with firecrackers inside it is ceremoniously burned.
Ravana is the face of everything that is evil.
Now Mother Durga is sent away home( to her in-laws) in the heavens by immersing her statue in different rivers after being requested to come back again next year.
