Kamsa woke up with a start and rushed to kill her.
Devaki's husband Vasudeva said to Kamsa, "Why do you want to commit the sin of killing your sister? As soon as a child is born to Devaki, we will hand it over to you."
Kamsa imprisoned Vasudeva and Devaki. As soon as a child was born to Devaki, Kamsa would kill it. After having lost seven of her children Devaki gave birth to her eighth child a son called Krishna.
Krishna was born at midnight, on the eighth day of Shravana. It was a dark night and there was thunder and lightning. It began to rain heavily. Miraculously the doors of the prison opened and all the guards fell into deep sleep. Vasudeva put his son in a basket and carring the basket on his head walked out of the prison!
