The Ganas rushed back to Lord Shiva and related to him about the self-immolation of Sati.
Lord Shiva's anger, was now that of raw nature. He pulled out one of his matted hair and dashed it angrily against the mountain. There was a deafening sound of explosion and  the matted hair divided itself into two parts From one part of it appeared powerful Veerbhadra. He was extremely tall and had one thousand arms. And from the other part appeared Mahakali (The mother of destruction).
Lord Shiva said, "Veerbhadra! Daksha, son of Brahma, has become extremely unethical in his behaviour. He has become very haughty. Go, destroy his Yajna. Punish everyone there participating in the Yajna. and return to me. Anyone trying to resist you must be burnt to ashes.
Behea the haughty Daksha and swallow all the water in the pitcher of the Yajna."
Following the orders of Lord Shiva, Veerbhadra reached the place of Daksha-Yajna with all the Ganas. There they began showering arrows on the gods.
Veerbhadra picked up Maharshi Bhrigu, threw him to the ground and pulled out his beard and moustache. He broke the teeth of Pusha, because while Daksha was shower his best isults on Lord Shiva, Pusha was grinning showing his teeth. Nandi, one of the Ganas of Lord Shiva, dashed Bhaga against the ground angrily and pierced his eyes with an arrow, thus making him blind; because Bhaga, had been signalling with his eyes that he was in agreement with Daksha's view of Lord Siva.
The Ganas caused humuliating plight to goddesses- Swaha, Swadha et all, who were present there.
Daksha had hidden himself out of fear. Veerbhadra pulled him out of hiding and tried to behead him with his sword. Daksha's spiritual power did not allow Veerbhadra to succeed. It was then ultimately that Veerbhadra twisted Daksha's neck, tore out his head from his body and threw it into the sacrificial fire. Haning caused complete destruction and also routed the entire gathering of gods, goddesses and sages there, Veerbhadra returned to Kailasa with the Ganas.

Having been severely punished and defeated by the Ganas of Lord Shiva at the place of Yajna, the sages and gods approached Lord Brahma.
Lord Brahma was already discomposed after coming ti know that Daksha, his son's head had been incinerated in the sacrificial fire of the Yajna.
Lord Brahma approached Lord Vishnu, his creator, along with the sages and gods. Lord Brahma said to Lord Vishnu, "Lord! At the orders of Rudra (the destructive manifestation of Lord Shiva), the Ganas have caused injury to the gods and incinerated the head of Daksha. O Lord! Please do something to undo what has been done by the Ganas. Lord! We are all in your shelter."
Lord Vishnu said, "0 Creator! All the gods and sages are guilty of having hurt insultig Lord Shiva; because they did not offer the Yajna's share to him.
But he is one who can be easily pleased. Go to him with a clean heart and ask for his forgiveness. I too shall accompany you all and ask for his kind forgiveness."
Lord Vishnu went to Lord Shiva along with the sages and gods. They offered their salutations and prostrated themselves before him.
They prayed to him and began saying in unison, "Maheshwara! You are the force behind all creation. O Lord! we have come to take shelter in you. Please protect us. Please bring Bhaga, Poosha, Bhrigu and other gods back to their original forms."
Lord Shiva, who can be easily appeased, was pleased and said, It's not because of me that Daksha's Yajna has been destroyed. It is only because Daksha was jealous of others. One is repaid in terms of his behaviour with others. Daksha's ego is the cause of his ruin. However, considering him a child, I extend my forgiveness to him," saying this Lord Shiva returned the gods and sages to their original forms, and replaced the head of Daksha with the head of a billy goat.
